A product-specific format

A printed header that makes a product peg-ready

Retail hang tabs combine presentation and load-bearing work in one piece of board. The slot fits the store hardware while the lower section attaches to a pouch, sleeve or soft product, so the pack can go straight onto a peg without a separate hanger.

The right starting point is a sample of the product and the actual hook. Once those two dimensions are fixed, the board, slot bridge, folds and printed fields can be designed as one working pack rather than as artwork added to a generic card.

Where this format fits

Retail Hang Tabs uses

01

Bagged accessories

Turn small cables, craft parts, fixings and haberdashery into peg-ready packs with a branded printed header.

02

Socks and soft goods

A folded tab carries size, fibre and barcode information while the product remains visible below it.

03

Samples and trial packs

Hang lightweight sample pouches where a conventional box would add unnecessary packaging.

04

Seasonal retail displays

Use one approved slot standard across short campaign runs so every pack fits the existing store hardware.

Build the specification

Retail Hang Tabs specification

Start with the hook, not the artwork
Supply the peg diameter and whether the fixture uses a round hole, sombrero slot or euro slot. The slot is the mechanical part of the job and determines the safe area above it.
Leave board above the slot
A slot cut too close to the top edge tears under handling. The minimum bridge depends on board weight, product weight and how often the pack is lifted from the peg.
Choose how the product joins the card
A tab can staple to a bag, fold over a pack or form part of a printed sleeve. That fixing method changes the open size and the position of every crease.
Test the loaded sample
A flat proof confirms colour; it does not confirm strength. The useful approval is a finished sample carrying the actual pack on the intended retail hook.
Keep the barcode clear
Place barcodes away from folds, staples and the hanging slot. A quiet reverse panel is usually easier to scan than squeezing a code under the front branding.
Artwork and file guidance

Prepare the artwork

Plan the finished format before export

Put the euro slot, fold and staple positions on their own non-printing dieline layer. Keep background bleed beyond the outer cut while protecting a clear bridge above the slot and a staple-free barcode panel.

Proof the card in its loaded orientation: the front message must remain upright on the peg, and every reverse field should stay clear of the fold, fixing and product pouch.

Retail Hang Tabs FAQs

What is the difference between a hang tab and a swing tag?

A hang tab has a die-cut slot that carries the pack directly on a retail hook. A swing tag normally hangs from the product on string, elastic or another attachment.

Which slot should I choose?

Match the store fixture. Euro slots suit common retail hooks, round holes suit simple pegs, and a bespoke slot should only be used after the hardware has been measured.

Can a hang tab hold a heavy product?

Only after the board, slot bridge and fixing method have been load-tested with the real pack. Heavier products may need laminated board, reinforcement or a structural packaging solution instead.
