Deep impression printing
Letterpress Swing Tags
Letterpress presses the image into the board rather than laying it on top, so the depth of the bite is the product and the board has to be soft enough to take it.

A product-specific format
Letterpress Swing Tags for product presentation
Letterpress Swing Tags give product teams a dedicated format for the information and presentation requirements of the item being sold. The specification should begin with the product it will be attached to, then account for the information the tag needs to carry.
Use the form to record the final size, card direction, print sides, finishing and attachment for letterpress swing tags. This keeps the practical decisions together before artwork is supplied or confirmed.

Additional information
Build the specification
Letterpress Swing Tags specification
- The board has to be soft
- Letterpress needs a thick, soft, fibrous sheet to bite into. Cotton and heavy uncoated boards work; coated and laminated stock does not take an impression at all.
- Depth is a specification
- Light kiss impression and deep bite are different products. Say which you want, because it changes the plate pressure and the board choice.
- Coverage should be small
- Letterpress suits type, rules and line marks. Large solid areas print unevenly and are the usual reason a letterpress job disappoints.
- One plate per colour
- Each colour is a separate plate and a separate pass on press, so a two-colour letterpress tag costs roughly twice the setup of a one-colour.
- The reverse shows through
- A deep impression bruises the back of the sheet. On a double-sided tag either accept it as part of the look or keep the reverse plain.
Artwork and file guidance
Prepare the artwork
Plan the finished format before export
Keep essential letterpress swing tags copy clear of the trim edge and attachment area. The page-specific artwork guidance explains the considerations for formats, holes, folds and variable product information.
Expect a small amount of dot gain as ink sinks into the sheet, so open up fine reversed-out type slightly and avoid very light tints that can disappear into the surface.
If letterpress swing tags artwork is not final, submit the product and specification details first. This gives the production conversation a clear starting point without forcing a premature file upload.

Questions and answers
Questions before you order
Letterpress Swing Tags FAQs
What stock does letterpress need?
A thick, soft, fibrous board — cotton or heavy uncoated. Coated and laminated sheets are too hard to take a bite, and the impression simply does not register.
Can I letterpress a solid block of colour?
You can, but it usually looks patchy. Letterpress excels at type, rules and line work; large solids are where the process shows its unevenness most.
Will the impression show on the back?
With a deep bite, yes. It bruises through the sheet. Either treat that as part of the character or keep the reverse of the tag unprinted.
