Toy tags with room for age and safety information
Toy tags carry age grading, safety and conformity markings and washing guidance alongside the brand and the story of the toy. Those required items cannot be dropped when space runs out, which is why toy tags are often folded.
Confirm the marking and warning requirements for your product before the artwork is final; the tag presents that information but does not decide it. Keep cords short and attachments secure on products for young children, and say who the toy is for in your notes.
Tag anatomy
Toy Tags: parts of the tag
Toy Tags start at 50 × 75mm on coated one side card. Each numbered part of the diagram is a choice you can change in the order panel.
- CardCoated one side, 250gsm to 1200gsm, with 4 other cards in the order panel.
- Front print areaLogo and brand name, printed full colour, in one to three colours or a Pantone match.
- Product detailsPrice, size, barcode, QR code or care notes, below the logo or on the back when the tag is printed on both sides.
- Bleed3mm of artwork past every trim edge, so colour runs cleanly to the cut.
- Hole and eyelet3mm drilled hole as standard, or 5mm with one of 4 metal eyelet colours.
- AttachmentChoose black lock string, white lock string, black elastic loop, white elastic loop and more, or no string.
Where this format fits
Toy Tags uses
Age grading
The recommended age is the first thing a buyer checks and the first thing a retailer is asked about.
Safety and conformity marking
Warnings, conformity marks and importer detail need a defined panel rather than whatever space is left.
Material and washing guidance
Soft toys get washed, so fibre content and washing instructions belong on the tag.
Play and brand storytelling
The outward face carries the character and range, while the regulated copy sits behind the fold.
Additional information
Build the specification
Toy Tags specification
- Age grading is not optional
- Age marking and small-parts warnings are the first thing to place on a toy tag and the last thing that should be cut for space. Set them before the decorative artwork.
- Required marking
- Depending on the product and market, the tag may need to carry conformity marking, importer detail and a batch reference. Confirm what applies before the layout is fixed.
- Panel count
- Safety copy, care guidance and brand story rarely coexist on one face. A folded tag is the usual answer on anything sold to children.
- Legible warning type
- Warning copy has a minimum practical size. Keep it on an uncoated or lightly coated panel where the ink will not spread and close up small type.
- Attachment away from small hands
- Cord length and attachment method matter more here than on other products. Keep loops short and specify the cord with the safety requirement in mind.
- Batch and quantity
- Where a batch code is printed, say so with the quantity, because it changes a single static run into a variable one.
Material, print and finish
Choose the details around the product
Toy Tags format alone does not determine the finished hang tag. The card, print, finish and attachment should be chosen together with the product context and artwork.
- Stock: Uncoated and recycled boards suit soft toys and wooden goods, and they take warning type cleanly without spreading it.
- Printing: Bright full-colour suits the category, but keep the warning panel high-contrast and off any coloured ground.
- Folding: A folded tag separates the selling face from the safety panel, so neither has to compromise for the other.
- Attachment: Short cotton loops are the norm. Long cords are avoided on products intended for young children.
Artwork and file guidance
Prepare the artwork
Plan the finished format before export
Give age grading, warnings and conformity marks a fixed place and a legible size before the brand design is added, so they stay readable even when space is short.
If the tag folds, keep required information off the fold and check the panel order on the proof.

Toy Tags FAQs
What has to appear on a toy tag?
At minimum the age grading and any small-parts warning. Depending on the product and market you may also need conformity marking, importer detail and a batch reference, so confirm the requirement before the layout is fixed.
Why do toy tags usually fold?
Because the safety copy and the selling copy compete for the same face. A fold gives the warnings their own panel without shrinking them or losing the brand artwork.
How small can warning text be?
Keep it well above the minimum you can technically print. On uncoated board the ink spreads slightly, so warning type needs opening up a step compared with the same size on a coated sheet.
Are long cords a problem on toy tags?
They can be, on products intended for young children. Short loops are the norm, and the attachment should be specified with the relevant safety requirement rather than chosen on appearance.
