Waterproof swing tags for wet and outdoor use
Waterproof swing tags are printed on a synthetic sheet rather than paper, so they resist water and tearing where card would soften or split. They suit garden and plant products, outdoor and marine equipment, swimwear and goods stored or shipped in damp conditions.
Waterproof describes the sheet, not every part of the finished tag: the print, the hole, any eyelet and the string all have to cope with the same conditions. Waterproof stock is not a standard builder option, so tell us how wet the tag will get and for how long, and the material is confirmed against that use.

Getting the best results from waterproof stock
Waterproof tags are printed on synthetic stock that does not absorb water and resists tearing, for products that get wet, cold or handled hard.
Choosing the weight
Waterproof stock is offered at 300gsm, 350gsm and 420gsm equivalents. The material is flexible rather than stiff: it bends without creasing and springs back. For plants, garden tools and outdoor products, 350gsm gives a good balance of flexibility and body. Choose 420gsm for larger tags or anything that hangs in the wind.
Where synthetic stock is worth it
Choose waterproof stock when the tag will meet water, condensation or frost: plants and nursery stock, chilled and frozen food, drinks in ice buckets, marine and outdoor equipment, and products stored in damp warehouses. Paper card softens, curls and tears in those conditions, while synthetic stock stays flat and legible.
For dry indoor products the extra cost rarely pays back; a laminated card protects against handling at a lower price.
Ink and print on synthetic stock
The surface does not absorb ink the way paper does, so artwork should avoid very heavy solid areas with all four process colours stacked high. Clean designs with moderate ink coverage dry fastest and resist rubbing best. Small text prints sharply because the ink does not spread.
Holes, strings and fixing
Synthetic stock is far more tear-resistant than card, so a standard punched hole holds well even on tags that blow about outdoors. Use a string that will survive the same conditions: a plastic lock string or nylon cord rather than cotton, which rots when it stays wet.
Writing on waterproof tags
Ballpoint and pencil do not mark synthetic stock reliably. If growers or staff need to write on the tag, use a permanent marker, or plan a printed panel that can be filled in with a paint pen. Test the pen you intend to use on a sample before ordering a large run.

- The surface is non-absorbent, so inks must key to it. Allow drying time in the schedule for heavy solid coverage.
- No perforation
- The tear resistance that makes the stock useful defeats a hand-torn perforation, so avoid detachable sections entirely.
- Hole and outdoor cord
- Pair the sheet with a cord that survives the same conditions. A cotton twine will fail long before the tag does.
- Exposure period
- State how long the tag stays outdoors. Weeks in a nursery and a single wet delivery are different specifications.
- Quantity and date
- Share the quantity and the date, and note that synthetic stocks are held in fewer weights than paper boards.
Material, print and finish
Choose the details around the product
Waterproof Swing Tags format alone does not determine the finished hang tag. The card, print, finish and attachment should be chosen together with the product context and artwork.
- Stock character: Tear and moisture resistance rather than surface appeal. Nobody chooses this sheet for how it feels in the hand.
- Printing on polymer: Colour sits on the surface with no absorption, so solids look dense but need longer to cure than on paper.
- Finishes that add nothing: Lamination is redundant on a waterproof sheet, and an emboss will not hold its shape in a polymer.
- Attachment for the outdoors: Plastic-coated wire, nylon or a moulded loop match the tag life. Reinforce the hole where the tag hangs under tension.

Is this paper or plastic?
It is a synthetic sheet rather than a wood-fibre board. That is what gives it the tear and moisture resistance, and it also means it behaves differently on press and at disposal.
Can waterproof tags be recycled?
Not through a normal paper stream, because the material is not wood fibre. If recyclability matters more than water resistance, a heavier coated board with a laminate is usually the better compromise.
Can you tear a perforation in it?
Not cleanly. The tear resistance that makes the stock useful also defeats a hand-torn perforation, so avoid designs that rely on a detachable section.
Does it need special inks?
