Use contrast deliberately
Logos, patterns and broad graphic shapes usually show the effect more reliably than fine text. The gloss is most visible as the tag moves under light, so the underlying print and surface finish remain important.
Artwork setup
- Supply the varnish area as a separate vector spot layer.
- Use solid shapes rather than tints or gradients unless specifically agreed.
- Allow for practical registration tolerance around printed elements.
- Keep critical varnish detail away from trim, folds and drilled holes.
- Confirm minimum line and gap sizes for the production method.
Proofing limitations
An on-screen proof can confirm position but cannot reproduce gloss level or tactile contrast. Spot UV can also affect writing, adhesive labels and barcode reflections, so test functional areas separately.

Use Spot UV as controlled local contrast
Spot UV places a gloss treatment on selected areas rather than covering the whole tag. It is most effective when the local reflection has a clear relationship to a logo, pattern or image. The effect depends on viewing angle and the contrast with the surrounding stock or laminate.
Create a separate vector mask at final size and use solid shapes appropriate to the process. Very fine lines, tight registration to small print and effects close to folds or cut edges can be difficult to reproduce consistently. Keep functional codes away from reflective treatment.
Choose the base surface with the spot effect. Gloss on a matt or Soft Touch background creates a different result from varnish on bare uncoated stock. Texture, lamination and dark solids also change the visible contrast, so a relevant physical reference is valuable.
Record coverage, sides, underlying stock and any laminate in the brief. Review the Spot UV separation independently from printed artwork, then assess the complete sample on the product. Use the process to direct attention rather than coating several unrelated details.
