Artwork & Layer Setup Considerations

When preparing concept artwork for custom tags with scratch-off elements, standard multi-layer vector separation is recommended for initial technical review:

Base Content Layer: Contains the underlying revealed text, PIN, or discount code. Ensure sufficient clearance around the code area so the scratch-off boundary provides complete coverage.
Latex Overlay Mask: Provide a dedicated vector mask layer on a separate spot-colour channel (e.g. named Scratch_Mask) showing the exact dimensions and positioning of the intended scratch area.
Release Barrier Layer: Physical scratch-off panels typically require a protective UV gloss varnish or barrier laminate beneath the latex so the coating peels cleanly without tearing the printed paper fibres.

Design the reveal, coating and data as one interaction

A scratch-off area hides printed information until the removable coating is rubbed away. Define what sits beneath it, what remains visible and why the customer should interact. Promotional wording, eligibility and redemption details need to be confirmed before artwork is released.

Keep the reveal area a simple, adequately sized shape and separate it clearly in the production file. Fine text, weak contrast and artwork close to the coating edge can reduce clarity. The underlying print and the opaque cover need to work on the chosen stock and surface.

If codes, prizes or serials vary, prepare a controlled record set and establish how each printed item is checked. Consider security, duplication and fulfilment rather than treating the variable value as ordinary display text. Representative proofs should include the longest and most complex records.
