Legibility troubleshooting
Why Small Text Becomes Unclear in Print
Small text loses clarity when its final size, stroke weight, spacing, contrast or printing surface leaves too little tolerance. The most reliable fix is usually to simplify the information hierarchy or provide more space, not to keep shrinking the type. Always assess a one-to-one print rather than enlarged artwork on screen.
Find the source of weak text
Readability depends on the complete word shape and context, not one nominal point size.
| Check | What it can indicate | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Final physical size | Artwork was reviewed enlarged or scaled down late. | Print at 100% and measure the finished tag. |
| Typeface and weight | Fine strokes, tight counters or condensed forms fill or break. | Use a clearer face, weight or larger setting. |
| Contrast | Similar colours or reversed fine text lose edge definition. | Increase tonal contrast and avoid fragile reversals. |
| Paper surface | Texture or ink absorption interrupts small detail. | Test on the named stock or simplify the typography. |
| Information volume | Too much copy is competing for limited space. | Edit content, use both sides or select a larger/folded tag. |
Review reading conditions, not only artwork
Consider how far away the tag is read, whether it hangs or moves and what lighting surrounds it. Price and product identifiers may need quicker recognition than secondary brand copy. Establish the priority before choosing a minimum setting, because no universal type size can compensate for poor contrast or unsuitable context.
Protect fine detail from production variables
Registration, ink spread, paper texture and cutting tolerance are physical processes. Fine white text reversed from several ink colours is less forgiving than dark single-colour text on a light surface. Keep essential copy away from trim, holes, folds and reflective finishes that can interrupt reading.
Use a full-size content proof
Print the actual artwork at 100%, cut it to size and ask another person to read the essential fields without zooming. Check names, sizes, prices, web addresses and care details. If the page succeeds only when held unusually close, revise the hierarchy before the production proof.
Test the final typography
- One-to-one printed mock-up
- Clear information priority
- Typeface counters and stroke weight
- Text-to-background contrast
- Named paper surface
- Reading distance and lighting
