Selective gloss varnish
Spot UV Swing Tags
Spot UV is a raised gloss varnish applied to chosen areas, so the whole effect depends on the contrast between the varnished shape and the matt board around it.

A product-specific format
Spot UV Swing Tags for product presentation
Spot UV Swing Tags give product teams a dedicated format for the information and presentation requirements of the item being sold. The specification should begin with the product it will be attached to, then account for the information the tag needs to carry.
Use the form to record the final size, card direction, print sides, finishing and attachment for spot uv swing tags. This keeps the practical decisions together before artwork is supplied or confirmed.

Where this format fits
Spot UV Swing Tags uses
Logo emphasis
Varnishing only the mark leaves the rest of the tag quiet and makes the logo the thing you notice.
Pattern and texture
A repeating varnished pattern over a flat matt ground adds surface without adding a second colour.
Photographic highlights
Varnish over selected parts of an image lifts them away from the rest of the picture.
Tactile brand cues
The raised surface gives the tag something to be noticed by touch as well as sight.
Additional information
Build the specification
Spot UV Swing Tags specification
- It needs a matt ground
- Spot UV only reads against a matt surface. On an already glossy sheet there is no contrast, so the varnish is invisible and the cost is wasted.
- Supply the varnish as its own layer
- The shapes to be varnished are a separate artwork layer, set as a spot colour set to overprint. Guessing from the CMYK artwork is not reliable.
- Registration limits
- The varnish is a separate pass and has a registration tolerance. Very fine hairlines and tiny type do not hold reliably in spot UV.
- Fingerprints show
- A gloss varnish over a dark matt board picks up fingerprints. On a dark tag that is handled a lot, consider where the varnish actually falls.
- Coverage affects cost less than tooling
- Spot UV is a screen rather than a metal die, so it is generally cheaper to set up than foil for comparable effect.
Artwork and file guidance
Prepare the artwork
Plan the finished format before export
Keep essential spot uv swing tags copy clear of the trim edge and attachment area. The page-specific artwork guidance explains the considerations for formats, holes, folds and variable product information.
Keep any handwritten or stamped field outside the laminated area, and identify whether the film covers one or both sides. Confirm the sequence if foil or another finish is also specified.
If spot uv swing tags artwork is not final, submit the product and specification details first. This gives the production conversation a clear starting point without forcing a premature file upload.

Spot UV Swing Tags FAQs
Why can I barely see the spot UV?
It almost always means the base is not matt enough. Spot UV works by contrast, so it needs a matt laminated or uncoated ground; on a gloss sheet there is nothing for it to contrast against.
How do I supply spot UV artwork?
As a separate layer using a spot colour set to overprint, showing exactly which shapes are varnished. Do not rely on the print artwork being interpreted correctly.
Is spot UV cheaper than foil?
Usually to set up, yes, because it uses a screen rather than a milled metal die. Choose between them by deciding whether the artwork needs clear shine or a metal effect.
