Hot foil stamped
Foil Swing Tags

A product-specific format
Foil Swing Tags for product presentation
Foil Swing Tags give product teams a dedicated format for the information and presentation requirements of the item being sold. The specification should begin with the product it will be attached to, then account for the information the tag needs to carry.
Use the form to record the final size, card direction, print sides, finishing and attachment for foil swing tags. This keeps the practical decisions together before artwork is supplied or confirmed.

Additional information
Build the specification
Foil Swing Tags specification
- Tooling is per design
- Foil needs a metal die made for your artwork. That cost is fixed, so it is absorbed easily across a long run and dominates a very short one.
- Board decides the effect
- Foil reads best against a matt, uncoated or dark ground. On a gloss laminated sheet the shine has nothing to contrast with and the effect largely disappears.
- Keep the artwork open
- Fine serifs and tight counters fill in under heat and pressure. Foil artwork usually needs opening up compared with the same design in ink.
- Foil colour is a physical roll
- Gold, silver, copper, rose, matt, gloss and holographic are different materials rather than colour values. Pick from samples, not from screen.
- One pass per colour
- Each foil colour is a separate stamping pass with its own die. Two-colour foil is two operations, and priced as such.
Artwork and file guidance
Prepare the artwork
Plan the finished format before export
Keep essential foil swing tags copy clear of the trim edge and attachment area. The page-specific artwork guidance explains the considerations for formats, holes, folds and variable product information.
Expect a small amount of dot gain as ink sinks into the sheet, so open up fine reversed-out type slightly and avoid very light tints that can disappear into the surface.
If foil swing tags artwork is not final, submit the product and specification details first. This gives the production conversation a clear starting point without forcing a premature file upload.

Foil Swing Tags FAQs
How much does the foil die cost?
It is a fixed one-off per design rather than a per-tag charge. On a long run it disappears into the unit price; on a very short run it is the largest single line, so check where your quantity falls.
Can I foil onto a laminated tag?
You can, but it rarely looks worth it. Foil depends on contrast between shine and a matt ground, and a gloss laminate gives it nothing to sit against.
Why has my fine text filled in?
Heat and pressure spread foil slightly into the counters of small type. Foil artwork usually needs opening up a step from the printed version, especially on fine serif faces.
