For hosiery and multipacks

Custom Socks Tags

Socks are sold in pairs and multipacks, so the tag usually has to band the set together and carry the size range at the same time.

Bands and hang tags

Socks tags and bands that hold pairs together

Socks tags often work as a band wrapped round a pair or multipack, holding the socks together while carrying the size range, fibre content and brand. A card band can replace a polybag, which is often why brands switch to one.

A band needs a card weight that wraps without cracking at the fold, and the size range should be the easiest thing to find. Describe the band size and how it closes, such as a slot, glue or string, in the Custom Tag Builder notes.

Tag anatomy

Socks Tags: parts of the tag

Socks Tags start at 50 × 110mm on coated one side card. Each numbered part of the diagram is a choice you can change in the order panel.

Where this format fits

Socks Tags uses

01

Pair banding

The band is what keeps two socks together on a shelf, so it is doing a physical job before a branding one.

02

Multipack presentation

A wider band holds three or five pairs as a single sellable unit without a plastic bag.

03

Fibre and performance claims

Merino, bamboo, compression and cushioning all justify a higher price, and the band is where that case is made.

04

Plastic-free packaging

A card band replaces a polybag outright, which is often the reason a brand moves to one in the first place.

Build the specification

Socks Tags specification

Banding a pair or a pack
Most sock tags are a wrap band rather than a hanging tag, because they have to hold the pair together as well as carry the information.
Size ranges, not sizes
Hosiery sells in ranges rather than single sizes, so the tag usually prints 6-8 or 9-12 and the artwork has to allow for the wider number.
Board weight for wrapping
A band has to bend around soft goods without cracking at the fold, which means a lighter, more flexible board than a hanging tag would use.
Fibre content and cushioning
Merino, bamboo and cushioned soles are the reasons the customer pays more, and the band is usually the only place that argument gets made.
Barcode on a curved surface
A band curves around the pack, so the barcode needs to sit on the flattest part of the wrap or it will not scan cleanly.
Multipack economics
A three-pack or five-pack band is a different item from a single-pair band. Count them separately when giving the quantity.

Material, print and finish

Choose the details around the product

Socks Tags format alone does not determine the finished hang tag. The card, print, finish and attachment should be chosen together with the product context and artwork.

  • Stock: Lighter boards around 250 to 300gsm wrap cleanly. Anything heavier fights the fold and springs off the pack.
  • Scoring: A band should be creased rather than simply folded, so the corners sit square around the pack instead of bowing.
  • Printing: Full-colour works well here, because hosiery bands often carry pattern and colour that match the sock itself.
  • Closure: Bands are usually glued, tabbed or slotted. A slot-and-tab closure lets the customer open and re-close the pack in store.

Artwork and file guidance

Prepare the artwork

Plan the finished format before export

Design a band as one long strip, with the join or slot marked so nothing important falls across it. Put the size range where it faces out on the shelf.

Check the band length against a real pair or pack before approval; a few millimetres decides whether it closes neatly.

Socks Tags FAQs

Is a sock tag a band or a hanging tag?

Usually a band. It has to hold the pair together as well as carry the print, which a hanging tag cannot do. Hanging tags appear mainly on single premium pairs.

What board weight wraps without cracking?

Around 250 to 300gsm with a proper crease. Heavier board springs away from the pack, and uncreased board cracks along the fold whatever the weight.

How should size ranges be printed?

As the range rather than a single number, for example 6-8. Allow for the widest number in the grid when the artwork is set so the largest range still fits the panel.

Can a band replace a polybag?

Yes, and that is often the point. A card band presents the pair, carries the barcode and removes the plastic in one change, provided the barcode sits on a flat part of the wrap.
