What is a Swing Tag?

Premium printed swing tag

A swing tag is a separate printed label attached to a product by string, ribbon, elastic, chain or another fastener. It can identify the brand, communicate product and price information, support care or compliance messaging, and add a deliberate presentation detail without being permanently fixed to the product.

What a swing tag does

A swing tag sits between packaging and labelling. Unlike a sewn-in label, it can be removed after purchase; unlike a box or sleeve, it can be added to products that do not need full packaging. Retailers use the front for recognition and the reverse for practical information such as price, size, product code or a barcode.

Brand identification
Logo, collection name, colour system and tone of voice help the product feel consistent with the rest of the range.
Product information
Size, material, care notes, provenance, price, SKU, barcode or QR code can be arranged in a readable hierarchy.
Presentation
Card texture, shape, print finish and attachment affect how the tag looks and feels at the point of sale.

The parts of a printed tag

A complete specification normally covers the finished size and shape, card stock, printed sides, hole position, attachment and any finishing process. These choices depend on one another: a small tag limits text size, a drill hole reduces the safe artwork area, and a dark stock may need an opaque ink or foil rather than ordinary process colour.

Swing tag, hang tag and swing ticket

In UK print and retail work, swing tag, hang tag and swing ticket are often used for the same removable product label. The useful distinction is not the name but the required function. A brief should describe what the tag must carry, where it will hang, how it will be attached and whether it needs to survive handling, moisture or repeated use.

What a swing tag does not replace

A decorative tag should not be assumed to replace legally required product, care, fibre, safety or food information. Requirements vary by product and market. Decide which information must remain permanently attached or appear on packaging, then use the swing tag for appropriate supporting information.
