Fold troubleshooting

Why Folded Swing Tags Crack at the Fold

Cracking occurs when the printed or finished surface cannot accommodate the bend created at the fold. Card thickness, grain direction, scoring, heavy ink, lamination and folding direction all contribute. A properly planned score can reduce stress, but the complete printed construction should be tested rather than judging unprinted card alone.

Check the fold construction

Examine whether the crack affects only ink or coating, the laminate film, or the card fibres themselves.

CheckWhat it can indicateNext action
Score lineMissing, shallow or unsuitable scoring concentrates stress.Confirm score position and method for the board.
Grain directionFolding against an unfavourable grain increases resistance.Review sheet planning and fold direction.
Ink coverageDense colour across the fold makes surface breaks more visible.Reduce critical coverage or approve a tested result.
LaminationFilm may whiten, bridge or separate at a tight fold.Use a compatible film and scored construction.
Folding sequenceFolding the wrong way reverses the intended score behaviour.Mark inside, outside and fold direction clearly.

Distinguish surface cracking from fibre failure

White lines through dark print can be visually prominent even when the board remains structurally sound. Splitting fibres or delamination indicates a deeper construction issue. Record the stock, print coverage, finish and direction of the failed fold so the relevant part of the process can be reviewed.

Design around the mechanical fold

Keep small type, barcodes and precision borders away from the score. Avoid making an uninterrupted block of critical dark colour depend on a perfectly invisible bend. Include the fold and panel order on the technical artwork layer and approve a folded proof at final dimensions.

Test after every material change

A fold that works on one card weight or laminate may behave differently on another. Duplex board, textured paper and different fibre compositions also change stiffness and surface response. Revalidate the construction when stock, thickness, coating or lamination changes instead of assuming the old score remains suitable.

Capture the failed construction

  • Named card and thickness
  • Print coverage at fold
  • Score type and position
  • Grain and fold direction
  • Lamination or surface finish
  • Photograph of inside and outside
