Are Swing Tags Eco-Friendly?

A swing tag can be designed to reduce material impact, but no tag is automatically “eco-friendly”. Recycled or responsibly sourced card, efficient sizing, restrained finishing and easy separation of attachments can improve the specification. Environmental claims should describe verifiable attributes rather than broad promises.

Assess the whole construction

The card is only one part of a swing tag. Lamination, foil, eyelets, plastic fasteners, adhesive elements and mixed-material strings affect how easily it can be recovered or recycled. A simple unlaminated paper tag with a removable natural-fibre attachment is easier for a customer to understand than a complex mixed construction.

Questions to ask about the card

  • What proportion of the stock is recycled fibre?
  • Is sourcing certification available for the exact stock?
  • Is the board coated, coloured through or laminated?
  • Will the print and finish change local recycling options?
  • Can the finished size be reduced without harming legibility?

Avoid vague environmental claims

Terms such as recyclable, biodegradable, compostable and plastic-free describe different properties. Recyclability depends on local collection and processing; biodegradability requires conditions and a time frame; compostability normally requires a recognised standard. State the material facts you can support and provide disposal instructions only where they are accurate.

Design for less waste

Right-size the tag
Use the smallest format that carries required information legibly.
Consolidate versions
Plan variable data and common artwork carefully to reduce obsolete stock.
Choose finishes with purpose
Avoid adding a process solely to make an unsupported sustainability claim look premium.
Plan separation
Make metal, ribbon or elastic components easy to remove where practical.
