Unbleached brown board
Kraft swing tags for natural and handmade ranges
Kraft swing tags are printed on unbleached brown board, so the card sets the look before any ink goes down. They suit handmade goods, food and drink, gifts and clothing ranges where a raw, natural surface fits the product better than bright white card.

Getting the best results from kraft card
Kraft is chosen for what it looks like before anything is printed on it, so the best kraft tags are planned around the brown sheet rather than in spite of it.
Choosing the weight
Kraft is offered from 250gsm to 420gsm. Unbleached fibre is springier than coated board, so a kraft tag feels lighter in the hand than a coated tag of the same number. 250gsm suits small gift tags and anything tucked inside packaging; 350gsm is the everyday choice for clothing and food; 420gsm gives a long tag enough backbone to hang straight on a rail or a bottle without curling.
If the tag will be handled repeatedly, such as a price tag that customers turn over, go one weight heavier than you would on white card. The extra stiffness also keeps the punched hole from stretching.
Designing for a brown ground
Treat the card as your background colour. Black, dark brown, deep green, navy and oxblood print with strong contrast; mid-tones become muddy; pale colours and pastels almost disappear. A one- or two-colour design in dark ink is usually more legible and more in keeping than full-colour artwork.
Avoid fine reversed type. Knocking text out of a solid area leaves the brown showing through, and the fibre edge is softer than white card, so reversed lines below 8pt lose definition. Keep small text as dark ink on the open card instead.
Proofing colour on kraft
A white screen will flatter every colour you put on a kraft tag. Before you approve artwork, view it with a mid-brown layer underneath set to multiply, which gives a closer idea of how ink sits on the sheet. If an exact brand colour matters, ask for a printed sample on the same card rather than relying on the screen.
Finishes that suit kraft
Foil is the strongest effect on kraft: gold, copper, silver and black foil sit on the matt surface and catch the light sharply. A blind deboss, with no ink at all, presses the logo into the fibre and suits brands that want the card to do the talking.
Lamination and Spot UV work against the material. A film hides the fibre texture that made kraft worth choosing, and a gloss coating looks out of place on a natural surface.
How kraft behaves in use
Kraft is uncoated, so it takes pen, pencil and rubber stamps well, which makes it a practical choice where a price, batch number or name is written on by hand. The other side of that is moisture: an unprotected kraft tag marks if it gets wet and softens in damp storage. For chilled food or garden products, choose a waterproof synthetic stock instead and keep kraft for dry shelves.

- Weight and rigidity
- Kraft board is usually specified heavier than a coated equivalent, because the unbleached fibre feels softer in the hand at the same weight.
- Ink over a brown ground
- State the brand colours as references rather than screen values. Every ink prints over mid-brown, so pale tones need checking before the run.
- White and metallics
- Decide early whether white appears as opaque ink or as foil. There is no unprinted white available on a kraft sheet.
- Hole and natural cord
- Jute, hemp and cotton twine suit the stock. Note the cord thickness, because a heavier twine needs a wider punched hole.
- Surface treatments
- Lamination flattens the fibre texture that makes kraft worth choosing. Blind emboss and foil work with the surface instead of over it.
- Quantity and date
- Share the quantity and the date you need them so the stock weight and finish can be chosen against the real deadline.

Choose the details around the product
Kraft Swing Tags format alone does not determine the finished hang tag. The card, print, finish and attachment should be chosen together with the product context and artwork.
- Stock character: The brown ground does the presentation work before any ink is applied, which is why kraft tags carry so little printed decoration.
- Printing over fibre: Single-colour and knocked-out designs hold up best. Photographic artwork loses contrast against the base and rarely justifies the cost.
- Foil against matt: Gold, copper and black foil give the sharpest contrast available on kraft, because the shine sits against an entirely matt surface.
- Attachment in keeping: Natural twine, waxed cotton or a bare punched hole suit the material. Coloured elastic tends to read as a mismatch.

Can you print white on kraft?
Not as an absence of ink. White has to be laid down as an opaque ink or applied as a foil, because the brown ground shows through anything translucent. Budget for it as a separate pass rather than assuming it from the artwork.
Why do colours look duller on kraft?
Every ink prints over a mid-brown base rather than white, so pale and pastel colours lose contrast. Dark inks, heavy solids and foils hold up best; proof on a brown ground rather than a white screen.
Is kraft the same as recycled card?
No. Kraft describes an unbleached pulping process and recycled describes fibre content. A kraft board may contain little recycled material, and a recycled board may be bleached white. Ask for whichever property matters to the claim you want to make.
Does kraft take a laminate?
It can, but lamination flattens the texture that made the stock worth choosing. If the tag needs protection, consider a heavier board or a waterproof stock instead.
