Foil Stamping vs Spot UV

Foil adds an opaque coloured, metallic or holographic material to selected artwork. Spot UV adds a clear gloss coating that reveals the print beneath it through sheen and tactile contrast. Choose foil when the added colour or metallic effect is essential; choose Spot UV when a clear highlight over printed artwork creates the intended contrast.

Select the effect before preparing the layer

Use foil for a logo, border or short detail that needs to remain opaque or materially distinct from process print. Use Spot UV to reveal a pattern, logo or selected printed area through reflected light. If the design needs a new metallic colour, clear varnish cannot replace foil; if it needs only surface contrast, foil may add unnecessary colour and tooling.

Simplify artwork for reliable production

Avoid gradients, transparency and photographic texture on the special-finish mask unless a specific production method has been agreed. Keep fine lines, gaps and type within confirmed limits. Allow sensible clearance from trim, holes, folds and perforations, and do not assume the finish can register perfectly to hairline printed detail.

Approve a physical reference when appearance matters

Foil shades change with material, lighting and viewing angle. Spot UV visibility depends on the background colour and sheen. A PDF proof confirms position, not the material effect. Compare a representative sample when the finish is central to brand colour or tactile presentation and record the selected foil or varnish direction in the job specification.
