Eyelets vs Drilled Holes

A plain drilled hole is usually sufficient when the board, edge clearance and handling load support the chosen attachment. An eyelet adds a metal component that can reinforce or decorate the hole, but it also changes diameter, thickness, artwork clearance and product contact. Add one for a defined reason rather than as a default premium feature.

Fix the geometry before adding hardware

Move the hole further from the edge, reduce tag leverage or select a more suitable board before assuming an eyelet will solve tearing. A reinforced hole can still fail if a heavy oversized tag pulls through a narrow section. Show the hole centre, diameter and eyelet flange on the artwork template.

Treat the eyelet as part of the visual system

Eyelet colour can coordinate with foil, print or product hardware, but supplier shades and surface finishes vary. The component adds thickness and can influence packing. Request a representative sample where colour matching, low profile or smooth reverse setting is important.

Check the product and attachment together

Thread the intended string, ribbon, chain or loop through the production-size opening. Confirm it moves without cutting, bunching or catching. Then place the tag against the real garment, jewellery, leather, bottle or package to check whether metal, knots or cut card edges can mark the product.
