The Substrate That Decides Your Brand Perception

You can’t fix a bad material with a good design.
You can’t upgrade perception if the tag feels cheap.
And you can’t use the same stock for kraft, foil, and plastic.

So let’s start where your design should: the base material.

swing tag materials

There Are 2 Material Rules. Don’t Violate Them.

  1. The material must match your product type.
  2. The finish must match your material.

Everything else — size, shape, printing — comes after.

📦 Uncoated Card

Feels real. Prints flat. Writes well.

  • No gloss or shine
  • Takes ink like paper should
  • Slight texture = great for minimal brands
  • Accepts foil & embossing (with care)

📎 Best for:
Clothing, wellness, handmade goods, modern brands

📦 Brown Kraft Card

Earthy, rough, and instantly “eco”

  • 100% recycled
  • Colour = dark brown or rustic beige
  • Texture = heavy grain
  • Doesn’t play well with light colours or foil

📎 Best for:
Eco brands, handmade candles, organic skincare

📦 Silk Coated Card

Smooth, soft, and upscale — but not glossy

  • Slight sheen, not reflective
  • Great for photo-based or luxury designs
  • Works with Spot UV & foil
  • Not writable

📎 Best for:
Luxury fashion, cosmetics, accessories

📦 Gloss Coated Card

Super shiny. Great for colours, bad for writing.

  • High colour contrast
  • Reflects light
  • Doesn’t absorb ink well (no pens)
  • Avoid if you’re embossing or need texture

📦 Recycled White Board

Clean look with eco-backend

  • Made from recycled pulp
  • Prints cleaner than kraft
  • Supports emboss, foil, deboss
  • Slight tooth, but balanced finish

📎 Best for:
Eco-luxury, conscious fashion, skincare

📦 PVC / Plastic

Durable, waterproof, industrial

  • Doesn’t tear or curl
  • Can be transparent or coloured
  • Not recyclable
  • Printed via screen or UV, not offset

Outdoor products, waterproof items, industrial gear

📦 Linen & Textured Paper

Rare, premium feel, low run only

  • Natural textile look
  • Can be hard to print cleanly
  • Works for letterpress, foil
  • Great for “touch = conversion” brands

Boutique perfumes, letterpress studios, artisan makers

Common Mistakes (Don’t Learn These the Hard Way)

  • Printing white text on kraft = unreadable
  • Embossing on gloss = no depth
  • Using pen on silk card = smears
  • Foil on recycled = patchy results
  • QR code on textured paper = won’t scan
  • Assuming plastic = premium (often isn’t)

Always test your design on the actual stock before mass printing.

Final Material Selection Checklist

  • Does this material fit the product type?
  • Does it support the print finish I want?
  • Is it compatible with my design contrast?
  • Will the feel of it impress or cheapen?
  • Does it match the sustainability claims?

Your swing tag doesn’t need to look good.
It needs to feel right.
